Beginner Knitting


Learn To Knit -- 101

Saturdays, August 9 & 16, 1:00-3:00pm

This class is for the Complete and Utter Beginners! In this two session class (4 hours total): learn the knitting basics of how to cast on, knit, purl, cast off and, of course, how to fix problems that might arise. Never be afraid of your needles again...you will learn to make them do what you want them to!

Tuesday, August 19, 6:30-8:30pm

For those who just need a refresher! Did you learn to knit once upon a time and maybe even remember knit and/or purl but are fuzzy on how to start and end, and some of the middle stuff, too? In this class you will get a refresher and rediscover the joy that is knitting! For people who learned a while ago but think they have forgotten... we will bring you back up to speed and get you dreaming of your next project!

Knitting in Round

Saturday, August 1, 10:00am-12:00noon

This class is for those of you who can already cast on, knit and purl and are now ready to delve into knitting in the round. In this 2 hours class we'll take the mystery out of knitting on double pointed needles and introduce you to the various ways of knitting in the round! Get ready for tips and tricks for gaining control over what looks like unwieldy pointy sticks and joining without twisting things into a mobieus (if you are not trying to achieve the mobieus twist) and look forward to a whole new adventure in knitting!

Crochet Granny Squares

Saturday, August 23, 10:00am-12:00noon

Grannies squares are a speedy and varied technique in crochet which are very good to have in the repertoire! For those who have already learned the basics of chains, single and double crochet stitches. In this 2 hour session we will explore crocheting in the round. Learn the basics of the Grannies Square, how to change colours, and variations to add personality to your projects as you see fit. Round and round and round we go!

Crochet For Knitters

Sunday, August 17, 10:00am-12:00noon

Even if you're not interested in doilies and afghans, crochet is an incredibly useful skill for the knitter.  This 2 hour session teaches you how to bring the power of the crochet hook to your knitting -- to pick up dropped stitches and fix mistakes, for painless seaming, for creating decorative edgings and joins, and for the mysterious and wonderful provisional cast-on.

--Please bring: two 6" squares of stocking stitch worked with 4 or 5mm needles and worsted weight yarn, some scrap yarn of the same weight in a contrasting colour and a 4.5mm crochet hook.

Little Bear

Looking for a fun little project that brings out the kid in all of us? Come learn to make this fantastic felted bear. Little Bear is knit using a great deal of shaping and then felted into the fuzzy bit of adorableness you see! With embroidered facial features this makes a great stuffed toy for kidlets or a great gift for those teddy bear enthusiasts (be that yourself or someone you know)!

Top Down Baby Sweater

Come on in and make a great cotton sweater for a little one in your life! For this class you need only be comfortable with very basic knitting (cast on/off, knit and purl). This two session (3 hours total) class will take you through all you need to know to knit baby sweaters from the top down! Finish this little gem and tackling a sweater for yourself is going to be so do-able!

Feel like cables might be a little daunting? The dirty little secret behind cables are that they are not to be frightened of... in fact this ever popular and wonderful texture and design building technique is quite easy to master. This 2 hour session will teach you how to work a variety of different cables with hands-on practice, demystify charts and written instructions. Come in for a confidence building exploration into the wonders of cables! Cabled Aran Sweaters...here you come!

Lace 101

Sunday, August 10, 10:00am-12:00noon

In this 2 hour class you will learn everything you need to know to tackle your first lace project, whether it's a simple scarf or a triangular shawl or even a sweater.  We'll teach you how to read and interpret lace patterns -- both written instructions and charts, how to work all the key stitches needed for lace patternwork, and how to properly block and finish your work.  We'll also share key tricks for ensuring your success, including the use of the lifeline!

Skills required: Knit, purl, increasing and decreasing.

You've mastered stripes, and now you're ready for something a bit more sophisticated.  This 2 hour session will teach you all the skills you need to tackle colourwork, both Fair Isle and Intarsia.  We'll explain the difference between the two, and how to work them both.  We'll teach you how to read and interpret the patterns and charts, and share tips and techniques for working with more than one colour at a time - including the magic of 2-handed stranding.

Fixing Mistakes a.k.a. - WTF? ---What's The Fault?

Oh no! Something’s wrong with your knitting? What’s the fault?! This 2 hour session will teach you how to spot and fix mistakes in your knitting, whether you’re a beginner or a seasoned knitter. We will share tips for safely ripping out stitches and rows, for fixing mistakes without ripping out, and for deciding when you don’t need to bother fixing at all.

Participants are encouraged to bring their "mistakes" with!

Painless Finishing

Thursday, August 14, 7:00-9:00pm

You've completed the knitting for your project, but too intimidated to finish it up?  This 2 hour session will teach you everything you need to know to quickly and easily finish up and assemble your knitting projects.  We'll cover seaming of all kinds, picking up stitches, weaving in ends and buttonholes -- and provide clever tips and techniques for reducing the finishing work, or at least to make it more fun.

Bring in your projects in need of finishing and learn the techniques to make your seams look seamless! Or if you just want to learn the techniques...Bring in a few swatches to learn basics instead!
